How to Use ChatGPT: A Beginner’s Guide
Find the official ChatGPT website, start a conversation, and improve your answers with a simple step-by-step guide.

1. Start at the official website
If you searched for “Chat GTP,” you probably meant ChatGPT, the AI assistant from OpenAI. Open chatgpt.com in your browser. Before entering account details, check that the address belongs to the official service. Our website is an independent guide; your account here is separate from OpenAI.
OpenAI provides free access with usage limits. The available models, tools, account requirements, and supported regions can change. Read the official Free Tier FAQ for current information. This guide does not promise unlimited use or access from every country.
2. Sign in when needed
Follow the sign-in or sign-up options shown by ChatGPT. Some functionality may be available without an account, while other features require one. Use only authentication methods presented by the official site. If you need the mobile or desktop app, use the official download page to find the right app.
Never share your password, recovery codes, or verification codes with a tutorial website or another person. This website does not need your ChatGPT credentials.
3. Ask a question with an outcome
Start with a task you can describe clearly. Instead of “write an email,” try:
Write a short, friendly follow-up email after a job interview. Thank the interviewer for their time, mention my interest in the role, and ask about next steps. Keep it under 120 words. Do not invent company details.
A useful first message contains four things: your goal, enough context, any constraints, and the desired format. For a learning task, say what you already know. For a coding task, include a minimal example and expected behavior, with secrets removed.
4. Refine the answer
You do not need to get the first message perfect. Follow up in the same conversation:
- “Make the tone more casual.”
- “Give me a concrete example.”
- “Explain this as if I’m new to the subject.”
- “Which parts are uncertain, and what should I verify?”
- “Show the result as a checklist.”
If the answer goes in the wrong direction, clarify the goal. Start a new chat for an unrelated topic so old context does not distract from it.
5. Check before you use it
AI can make mistakes, give outdated information, and invent citations. Open the sources behind important claims. Run code in a safe environment and review it. Avoid sharing personal records, passwords, customer information, or confidential work material. Use qualified professionals when a decision requires specialist judgment.
6. Try a practical first task
Choose a small, low-risk task: outline an article, explain a concept, draft a message, or organize a personal checklist. Use our prompt studio to create a starting prompt. It organizes your instructions in your browser; it does not send your text to an AI service.
Continue with the prompt-writing guide, or use the troubleshooting guide if the official service does not open.
