Better ChatGPT Prompts: A Practical Guide
Use a goal, context, constraints, and format to write better prompts for writing, learning, planning, and coding.

A four-part prompt framework
A good prompt makes your expectations visible. Use this structure:
- Goal: What should be done?
- Context: Who is it for, and what does the assistant need to know?
- Constraints: What must be included, avoided, or kept within a limit?
- Format: Should the result be a draft, table, checklist, explanation, or code?
You can add: “Ask a clarifying question if an important detail is missing.” This is usually more helpful than asking the assistant to guess.
Writing: give the audience and tone
Draft a welcome email for new members of a neighborhood book club. The audience is adults who enjoy casual discussion. Use a warm tone, keep it under 150 words, and include placeholders for the meeting date and location. Do not invent logistical details.
Ask for one revision at a time: shorter, warmer, more direct, or more specific. Edit the draft yourself before sending it.
Learning: ask for explanation and practice
Explain how a binary search works to a beginner who knows basic Python loops. Use a small sorted list, walk through each step, then ask me three practice questions. Wait for my answers before giving the solutions.
For facts that may change, ask for primary sources and verify the links. An answer that sounds confident can still be wrong.
Coding: describe expected behavior
Help me debug a Python function that should remove duplicate strings while preserving order. Here is a minimal example with no secrets: [paste code]. The current result is [result]; I expected [expected result]. Explain the cause, propose the smallest fix, and show useful edge cases to test.
Include relevant versions and an error message, but remove access tokens, customer data, and private file paths. Review generated commands before running them.
Planning: make constraints concrete
Help me plan a weekend apartment move. I have two helpers, a van for four hours on Saturday, and twelve packed boxes. Create a schedule, identify missing information, and end with the first three actions I should take today.
Treat the plan as a draft. Check travel times, costs, availability, and other real-world assumptions yourself.
Improve the next answer
If a response is vague, quote the part you want changed and describe what useful detail looks like. If it makes unsupported assumptions, ask it to list them. For a complicated task, divide it into smaller stages and check the result between stages.
Use the prompt studio
Our prompt studio turns your goal into a starter prompt for four task types. It runs in your browser, without calling an AI model. Copy the text, review it, and paste it into the official ChatGPT website.
